Mosque on the Citadel

The coloring page illustrates the imposing Mosque of Muhammad Ali, prominently located within the historic Citadel of Cairo, Egypt. This mosque, also known as the Alabaster Mosque, is often referred to colloquially as the "London Bridge." The nickname originated due to the resemblance of the mosque's arched stone bridge to the famous London Bridge. The Mosque of Muhammad Ali holds a special place in Cairo's skyline with its Ottoman-style architecture, grandiose domes, and slender minarets that reflect the grandeur of Turkey's mosques, which is atypical in Egyptian designs.
Did you know?
A remarkable story about this mosque is that Muhammad Ali Pasha built it in memory of his eldest son, Tusun Pasha, who died in 1816. Despite its serene appearance, the mosque's construction, from 1830 to 1848, was set against a backdrop of power struggles and represented Muhammad Ali's ambition to establish a dynasty that would outshine the Ottoman rulers in Istanbul.
