Known in Portuguese as Torre de Belém, the landmark was constructed during the reign of King Manuel I and completed in 1519. It helped defend the entrance to Lisbon’s harbour while also serving as a ceremonial gateway to the city.
Belém Tower is one of Portugal’s finest examples of Manueline architecture, a distinctive style known for its elaborate stonework and nautical decorations. Its carved ropes, armillary spheres, battlements and crosses reflect Portugal’s maritime history. The tower and nearby Jerónimos Monastery were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
