Originally known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, the Colosseum was constructed between approximately AD 70 and 80 under the Roman emperors Vespasian and Titus. It was the largest amphitheatre built during the Roman Empire and could welcome tens of thousands of spectators.
The arena hosted public spectacles, including gladiatorial contests, animal hunts and elaborate performances. Earthquakes, changing uses and the removal of stone damaged much of the structure over the centuries, but its surviving walls remain a powerful example of ancient Roman architecture and engineering.
