Lisbon is the capital and also the largest city of Portugal. The population is estimated to be at 2 971 587 inhabitants, in 2021. It is a very beautiful city with plenty of historic landmarks and wonderful places to visit.
It is the westernmost capital of mainland Europe and also the only one along the Atlantic coast. It is an important economic center and also one of the oldest cities in the world. In Europe, it is the second-oldest capital city after Athens, dating back from 1200 BCE.
Lisbon was not always the capital of Portugal. First, there was the city of Guimaraes, then there was Coimbra and even Rio de Janeiro was the capital for 13 years.
One of the landmarks of the city is the Belem Tower (which we covered in another article), and this beautiful tower used to be a prison in the past. The locals in Lisbon have 2 names: Lisboetas and Alfacinhas. While the first one is pretty obvious, the second one is derived from the Portuguese word for lettuce and it means “little lettuce”. It is believed that they got this nickname from the old times when the residents didn’t have much to eat other than vegetables, which was mostly lettuce.
While some old books are referring to Lisbon as the city on seven hills (similar to Rome), it actually lays on eight hills. The Lisbon Oceanarium has one of the largest indoor tanks in Europe, and here you will also find one of the world’s most top-secret recipes – that of Pasteis da nata. This is the famous Portuguese Custard Tarts which became Portugal's National Treasure. They are simply delicious.
